Abstract

The essay gives a brief profile of archaeological research projects for the period between late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, carried out in Rome over the last thirty years. It highlights as the guiding principles for the results achieved from numerous excavations: the intermittent use of urban spaces, the scattering and spread of inhabited places and the extreme variety of the contexts (such as degraded areas opposed to marvellous basilicas). Future themes will be urban burial sites, the relationship with the surrounding territory, the structure of urban society, and the perception of urban space in a city of so many ancient ruins.
