Abstract

Biographies of many protagonists in the Italian Risorgimento, both women and men, often reveal a challenge to customs and values of the traditional society: now young people aim to choose their own destiny, particularly their private life. Love marriage,extramarital relatioships, oppose themselves to the traditional customs that entrust to the elderly the decisions on young people’sdestiny. For the young women patriots, to participate in the political struggle and in their own domestic conflict for personal freedom are one, as the cases mentioned in the article show.

Laura Guidi, Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II

Laura Guidi until 2017 has beenassociated professor of Contemporary History and Gender History at the University of Naples Federico II. She has published many essays onvarious issues of Social and Cultural history and Gender history (XIXth-XXth century). She is a founder member of the Società Italiana delle Storiche. From 2018 she has continued her activity as a freelance researcher. She is editor of "La camera blu. Journal of Gender Studies".
