Abstract

Literature has largely shown that body image is a multi-dimensional construct, associated to a wide range of well-being outcomes. Several socio-cultural processes play a key role in the development of body image. This qualitative study aimed at investigating the most relevant psychosocial factors that affect the relationship with the body. Participants were 24 young adults aged 18 and 19 (50% female) attending the last year of high school. In-depth interviews with each participant were conducted and a thematic analysis was carried out and involved line-by-line coding with codes deriving from narratives. Three major themes emerged: body image and the quality of the relationship with the body; the influence of other people; and mass media as conveyors of beauty ideals. In line with an ecological perspective, results showed that body image is the result of different aspects, involving individual dimensions, as well as social and cultural environments. Implications are discussed.
