INNER AREAS, AREAS OF EXPERIMENTATION WITH COMMUNITIES
The architectural project is an essential tool for the social and cultural re-activation of small
countries, many of which are in chronic neglect: it is essential but it is not enough. The chance
for these small towns and villages, mainly placed on the central-southern Italian Apennines,
to reverse the tendency towards abandonment however depends on the endogenous forces of
the communities that live in these centres. The recent Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated
teleworking processes and this seems to have opened up new and unexpected opportunities
for younger generations to work with qualifications, despite living in their places of origin.
The text focuses on some experiments in three small communities of Molise (Riccia, Jelsi,
Gambatesa), placing these recent experiments of design research onto the wake of reflections
about the inner areas that experienced the XX century.
