Abstract

The learning-by-cases for sustainable urban infrastructure design

The aim of this article is to identify which planning possibilities characterise the conversion of an urban infrastructure into a sustainable one; this is done through the identification and critical analysis of 28 best cases. The interest in green infrastructure for the planning of a resilient city is a topic that is constantly being updated and refined; rarely are reference made to the possibility of converting urban infrastructure assets in cities. The case study of Genoa’s Sopraelevata represents a useful reference for the correct evaluation of the recovery of the grey infrastructure heritage through a process of refunctionalisation and redesign with a sustainable footprint. Using a learning-by-cases methodology makes it possible to identify which parameters are essential and replicable in a sustainable redevelopment project of an infrastructure in order to draw design guidelines to follow.
