Abstract

In the present essay we intend to highlight the existence of a particular and characteristic “spirit of place”, that is a genius loci, of the Mediterranean cities, focusing on the invariants, recognizable along the bi-millenary urban history and that may be found still today in the continuous stratifications.

The invariants, which form the basis of the spirit of the Mediterranean urban place, may be found in the historical stratification, the habitat, streets, the environment, urban spaces and neighbourhoods, in the immaterial values of voices, colours, sounds, cultural traditions, etc.

The aim is the preservation of the historical identity of the cities, of material values, but also immaterial ones, recognised within the integrated urban conservation, as well as of the spirit of place.
