Abstract

Copies of lost documents on the expulsion of the Jews from the Viceroyalty of Naples

The article analyzes a procedural file that allows us to know the difficult negotiations that preceded the last and definitive Jewish expulsion of 1541 from the Viceroyalty of Naples, the edict regarding which has not yet been found. The original file of the trial held in the Royal Chamber of Sommaria in 1541 was unfortunately destroyed during the Second World War, but the author found an handwritten copy ‒ though, probably incomplete ‒ made between the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century, on behalf of the Apulian scholar Giovanni Beltrani (1848-1932); this precious copy is today in the Metropolitan Library “De Gemmis” in Bari, Italy. The general content of the file was already known through its detailed summary by Ferorelli, but the complete edition of all the related documents is provided here for the first time in an appendix to this study.
