Abstract

This study examines the relationship that the concepts of naive and sentimental interweave with Schiller’s two main aesthetic categories, the beautiful and the sublime. It has the twofold theoretical intent of clarifying how the concept of naive constitutes a peculiar synthesis of both the aesthetic qualities of the beautiful and the sublime, and the moral and teleological perspectives that beautiful and sublime represent in the general context of Schiller’s reflection on the problem of man’s destination. I proceed by investigating the different modulation of the relationship between real and ideal in each of these aesthetic phenomena through the notions of form and idea, and then draw conclusions about the role that the figure of the sentimental plays in Schiller’s teleology.
