Abstract

The linguistic impact of the new coronavirus pandemic in the Italian common language has been the object of a number of studies, while institutional and technical-scientific communication has not received as much attention. In the present study, we propose an analysis of a series of morphosyntactic and semantic phenomena involving the names of the virus and of the disease it causes in institutional texts, including those of a more technical character. The study focuses on the incongruences, the lack of homogeneity and the variability that these texts display, while highlighting the mechanisms at the root of the confusion between the virus and the disease, and pointing out the possible causes of this semantic overlap.
