In promoting the modern vision of the State, Hobbes renews the links with some aspects of Greek thought, extraneous to the line that leads from Plato to Aristotle, however turning the premises towards entirely different outcomes. This occurs through the re-proposition of a negative anthropology on non-Christian bases, combined with the idea of politics as artifice, on the background of the distinction between the natural condition of man and civil status, in the first place; secondly, through the use of a notion of equality conceived in terms of equilibrium or balance between powers.
