Abstract

The article proposes an analysis about the evolution of the school desk and its role in the classroom. From the beginning, the school desk has a primary function, a support surface for reading and writing with a chair, remaining substantially unchanged; but the school desk has also a secondary significant function which orders, from time to time, the role it assumes in the classroom in relation to evolution of the pedagogical project.

The continuous change of the shape of the school desk produce a “silent narration” of this object of furniture and of its significant dimension. In the concrete transformation of its constituent parts, you can read the evolution of a school idea from a traditional concept, in which the child is considered in a standardized perspective of “order” and “discipline”, to a contemporary idea of school, in which the child is free to live personal training path in “continuous movement” and in “permanent transformation”.
