Abstract

Polarised between wholehearted admiration for Lorenzo Milani and terrible and slanderous accusations against him and his school of thought, Italian culture has yet to come to terms with the human and political legacy left by Barbiana's prior.  His legacy is yet to discover and fully understand in all its multifarious forms. It could be maintained that, through it, it is possible to find the key to a new humanism, to fight the degeneration of an "affluent society" which discriminates against individuals on the basis of what they have rather than on what they are. The "teaching revolution" led by don Lorenzo while in Barbiana is part of this extraordinary legacy which has been at the centre of fierce sectarian disputes. The underlying life lesson has remained unlearned since then, and is being lost beneath forgetfulness and the dust of time.
