Abstract

Due to the scarcity of preserved works, the role of documentary sources is central to reconstruct the history of the sumptuary arts of the Middle Ages and the 15th century in Genoa and Liguria. If one examines the Genoese area in the first half of the 15th century, among the archival series already valued by 19th-century scholars is the one relating to pleas to agree on per capita taxation, forwarded to the government by artists specialised in sumptuary techniques and artisans of the most varied backgrounds. The comparative analysis of various documents, both published and unpublished, identifies possible signs of crisis in the production 'system' of the sumptuary arts in the years around 1440.
