Abstract

This article focuses on the relationship between interpersonal violence and justice in late-medieval Italy, focusing on the ways in which new laws on vendetta developed from the mid-thirteenth century onwards affected the management of violent conflicts in judicial settings. In order to do this we will examine a criminal trial officiated in Bologna in 1306 against two Florentine citizens who committed a revenge-motivated assault against a Florentine White Guelf exile who was then residing in the university city. This case study will also shed light on the consequences of the encounter between the judicial and political spheres – a phenomenon ever more present in Bologna and other cities from the early fourteenth century onwards.
