Abstract

The aim of this monographic section is to study some aspects of the residential choices of the city nobility and the strategies of control over the urban territory adopted by these families in the late Middle Ages, and particularly in the 15th century. Four case studies will be examined: the city of Genoa – where the development of family associations known as alberghi was intimately linked to the elites’ desire to acquire urban property – and Naples, where the residential strategies of prominent families can be understood through the system of the 5 Seggi. Rome will be studied by considering on the one hand, the residential choices and mobility of the urban nobility, and on the other, the transmission strategies developed by the cardinals in the 15th century.
