Abstract

Manentes are a social category that has been well studied as one of the forms of “new serfdom” widespread in the Italian countryside during the 12th and 13th centuries. However, its early medieval history remains substantially unknown. The article aims to fill this gap through systematic insights into documentary sources and their comparison with the collections of capitularies transmitted by manuscripts. The birth of the manentia and its transformation during the high Middle Ages will be regarded as valuable indicators of deeper structural changes, which concern the setting of the individual in space and society.
