Abstract

Medieval Roman monasticism has historically been of little scholarly interest, overshadowed, as so often happens, by the imposing presence of the papacy. The essays published here attempt to fill this gap, at least in part, by gathering together research relevant to the later Middle Ages, and in particular to the mendicant orders. Benedictine monasticism, however, remains relatively unexplored.
