The two wives of Peter Candiano IV (959-976): women and their families in Venice during the 10th century

The historical studies about venetian families in the Early Middle Ages usually focused on an almost completely male universe: they limited themselves to mention the names of some of the dukes’ wives, without setting these women in a coherent familiar context. Through the study of a particular case – that of Peter Candiano IV and of his two wives – I will try to analyze how the two women, both belonging to the mainland, acted in the city within the social boundaries commonly reserved to them. They both maneuvered between alliances and property’s transactions and, among emperors and monasteries, they tried to work out a role for themselves and for their own families.
