This essay, based on the 14th century cartulary conserved in the archive of Sant’Orso’s collegiate church, studies the history of the confraternity of Porta Sant’Orso in Aosta. This cartulary represents an interesting point of view for studying the history of a not well-known confraternity, between the end of 12th and mid 14th centuries. Dedicated to the Holy Spirit, the confraternity of Porta Sant’Orso seems deeply related with Sant’Orso’s suburb and society: the bond with the burgenses and local institutions helped the confraternity to become one of the most important social and political actors of the neighbourhood.
