Abstract

During his Italian journey, Henry VII's documents are not written by chancery clerks, but by the notaries of the chamber, a financial office. The preservation of current documents and preparatory writings gives us information about the operation of the chamber ad about people working there. Analyzing these writings, we can see that the emperor knew how important and useful documents could be: because of that, he was not afraid of using new documentary models to manage better the new situations he had to face. The head of the chamber was Bernardo de Mercato, a learned notary, with excellent professional skills, who worked in Italy and Europe at count of Savoy’s service. His abilities allowed him to gain Henry’s confidence and he took advantage of the techniques of Italian notaries to give his sovereign the most suitable solutions for his requirements.
