Abstract

In recent decades, the veil worn by Muslim women in Europe has taken on a particular symbolic and divisive value that has gone beyond its meaning as mere religious clothing.
In fact, many EU Member States - defined in Professor Faggiani's book as "prohibicionistas" - have reacted to the choice of Muslim women to wear the veil as an integral part of their identity with restrictive measures that have often taken on the tones of a "clash of civilisations".
The veil, in particular, is interpreted as a symbol that conveys and evokes heterodox values that do not conform to the dominant culture and in any case conflict with constitutional principles that are felt and experienced as inalienable.
