Abstract

REINVENTING SCHOOLS AS SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL REGENERATION HUBS. A REVIEW OF OPEN SPACES POTENTIALS OF HIGH SCHOOLS IN NAPLES
Abstract
School buildings accommodate students who are commensurate with the number of inhabitants, according to the neighborhood unit’s principles. Schools can help rebalancing urban metabolism when they are re-designed in the light of the neighborhood where they are located: adapting spaces to the social distancing due to Covid 19, empowering social capital within and around those services, and opposing climate change’s effects. The key idea, therefore, consists in adapting their surroundings in order to implement socio-ecological regenerative shelters. Once green areas are planned for the outdoor aggregation of teachers and students, schools can enjoy the total redrawing of public open spaces to even accommodate activities addressed to inhabitants. Moreover, the power of schools as learning communities gives the opportunity to deal with adaptation by means of cross-generational educative practices. First data processing will be presented accordingly about the Neapolitan high schools’ green environment.
