The study of the “lighthouse territory” allows tracing the opportunities to activate a place-based process of territorial regeneration. The hypothesis is based on the ability of the “lighthouse” element to promote cultural and socio-economic processes by reinvigorating that historically held character of centrality and reference of the identity of the coastal territory. The lighthouses of the Campania Region, in the South of Italy, are analysed and through their classification, the peculiar characteristics and the opportunities for regeneration are identified through a cultural and touristic reconfiguration of the buildings, starting from the architectural project. According to the Japanese concept of “MA”, through the architectural project the possibility of revitalizing the lighthouse territories and increasing their attractiveness is verified. The interpretation of the MA of lighthouses allows to outline the phases of a regeneration process that integrates the systemic logic, with which heterogeneous territories are related, and recognizes the centrality of the architectural design and the evaluation process, intended as instruments of interpretation as well as valorization of fragile landscapes.
