The New Urban Agenda (NUA) is a global reference in terms of urban development which, for the first time, has explicitly proposed gender equality as one of its goals, and gender mainstreaming as a necessary tool in the construction of better, more sustainable and more inclusive human settlements. This paper aims to expound that this can only be accomplished by a greater presence of women in all spheres and stages of the processes and, specifically, by increasing their participation in technical teams that, according to the NUA declaration, are one of the most important stakeholders involved in urban planning.Recognition of women’s contributions is one of the ways to promote female participation in any professional field. The official story of architecture and urban planning –which greatly affects the configuration of the profession- has systematically forgotten women’s work and biographies, including those ones who should be recognised as masters because of their relevance. This paper goes over some of the main recognition mechanisms that end up building the history of architecture and urban planning and the ideal professional models. Reference sex-disaggregated data are provided, as well as some recent initiatives which have been undertaken from different angles in order to: make more visible the work of women architects and urban planners, widen professional models, and promote the reshaping of the profession to make it more inclusive and adapted to current urban development needs.
