Abstract

The Byzantine Law against the Jews: The Macedonian Legislation

During the Byzantine era, the Macedonian legislation represents a kind of model policy concerning the Jews. A number of sources indicate that both Basilius I and his son Leo VI promoted a real persecution that reached also South Italy: the first is found in the two legal manuals, the Prochiron (39.21 e 32) and the Eisagoge (40.33 and 34; 9.13), another in the great collection of the Basilika together with the Novel 55, and yet another in an addition to a norm preserved into the Book of the Prefect (6.16), all of which communicate that measures were taken to prevent Jews from owning slaves because of the fear that the Jews would eventually circumcise and convert their those they owned.
