Exchanges, connections and trade between Europe and Southern Italy in Late Middle Ages
the case of the saffron from L’Aquila

This paper will discuss the main dynamics about connections between L’Aquila and the rest of Euro-Mediterranean area in relation to saffron trade. This spice, beginning in the 14th century, transfromed
the Abruzzi city into a very important center of exchange and production on international scale. The quality of saffron from L’Aquila captured the interest of the most important foreign commercial companies, many of which came from southern Germany, who decided to establish themselves directly in the city. The presence of foreigns merchants provoked effects on the economical and social level that will be highlighted here. Among the various groups of foreigners, in this essay we have chosen to focus on the main events that concerned to German community, whose history was closly interwined with that of the saffron trade.
