Duces and magistri militum in Exarchate of Italy (6th-8th Century)

This essay analyzes the denominations that high-ranking military officers operating in Byzantine Italy adopted. It also highlights their relations with the emperors, the exarchs, the army they led, and the external powers (the Church and the Lombards).
