Abstract

This paper presents a status questionis on the noted forgery known as the Constitutum Constantini by providing a synthesis of its contents and an evaluation of the main oreintations with regards to the environment and the period in which the forgery was constructed: the Roman curia during the second half of the 8th century, or the Frankish court during the fourth decade of the 9th century. The latter hypothesis, which Johannes Fried has once again recently suggested on the basis of codicological arguments, will be discussed in detail.
