The leather market played a prominent role in late medieval cities. Focusing on the purchases of imported raw materials in the city of Bologna in the early 14th century this contribution analyses the hides, tanning materials, and footwear market and the value of these goods. The prices of wholesale materials were identified within the Memoriali, public registers produced by the Commune of Bologna. Moving from these documents, the article focuses on the role of the economic operators involved in the purchases, aiming at understanding the influence of the corporative policies on the leather market organisation. In conclusion, the article analyses the price formation process of leather and footwear manufacturing to identify the key elements of the production cycle.
