Abstract

This article deals with the discussion on economy and institutions in late medieval Italy. The opportunity comes from a list of revenues for 23 communities in the Apulian area: it allows for an in-depth look at the subject of municipal taxation in the Kingdom of Naples, which has so far received little attention. This will emphasize not only the importance those tax systems assumed in the relations between kings and communities from the 14th century onward, but also how they exerted an important influence on the structuring of economic spaces and hierarchies: they helped to articulate city interests through differentiated patterns of integration in the network of markets and jurisdictions.
