Abstract

The comment takes up some threads from the volume edited by Paola Guglielmotti from an early modern perspective and discusses them in a temporal and spatial comparative approach with a focus on spaces of action. A reflection on different concepts, thematic foci around the dowry and its implications is followed by an examination of parameters of inequality, a far-reaching restriction of widows’ property rights from 1143 onwards, women’s free assets in the form of the extradotes. The commentary also emphasises the wide range of types of assets and situational contexts as well as the connection between law and practice.
