Abstract

The contracts of libellus are not the means to get free farmers into a new class of subdued peasants, but they reflect the several social levels of the tenants, from the owners, who remain as they are, to the propertyless. Such a new reading suggest a more accurate understanding of the surveys and polyptychs of IX and X centuries, where the libellarii are mentioned not so frequently, and are treated as free men, while most of the dependent peasants are bound to more severe working conditions and are often of servile status.
