Dante through documents. II. Preconditions and contexts of Dante’s political commitment in Florence (1295-1302)

The section includes twelve papers and aims to investigate the significance of the brief commitment of Dante Alighieri in Florence's political institutions between 1295 and 1302. The authors of a first group of papers (E. Faini, A. Montefusco, P. Borsa, M. Grimaldi) give an account of the background of this commitment, analyzing the political implications of education and poetry in thirteenth century Florence. A second group of papers (L. Tanzini, E. Brilli e A. Zorzi) investigate the institutional and political context of those years in the light of normative sources and chronicles. A third group of papers (D. Cappi, D. Carron, P. Gualtieri e D. Bortoluzzi) compares Dante and Florence with contemporary figures and city-communes. An overall review of the documents recording the poet’s political commitment by G. Milani concludes the section.
