Carlo Cecchelli and the Langobard Art in Cividale through the publications of the Società storica friulana and the Deputazione di storia patria per il Friuli

Between 1918 and 1922 and then in 1927 Carlo Cecchelli published on «Memorie storiche forogiuliesi» magazine of the Società storica friulana and the Deputazione di storia patria per il Friuli, a number of dense essays on Langobard art at Cividale del Friuli. Texts reissued in 1943. It is very important interventions, which have laid the foundation for many of the subsequent research. In fact, Cecchelli studied with great attention the works Cividale, trying to provide information about their history and meanings of those artistic expressions. Many of the achievements in those studies have proven accurate and later still useful for further investigations. This paper aims to summarize and comment the most interesting parts of those essay, placing them in the critical debate of the early 20th century the early medieval art.
