Abstract

Like everywhere in Europe, also in the Trentino region (which was part of the Habsburg Empire) the historical research made important progresses between 1880 and World War I, especially thanks to the publication of a large number of magazines. An important contribution came from German and Tyrolean historians, especially from the point of view of archival and diplomatistic materials, while the researches of the scholars from the Trentino region and from Italy were, on the whole, of a lower quality, marked as they were by provincialism and a certain weakness in method, and for the fact that they were sometimes, though not exclusively, conditioned by the irredentist and nationalist attitudes of some intellectuals. These positions prevailed immediately after the end of the war, although the critical method acquired in the previous decades remained a shared heritage.
