Village political community and social exclusion. A review of early medieval inhumation modes (V-VIII centuries)

Archaeological research on early medieval funerary universe has traditionally focused on large necropolis and dressed burials. Other forms of inhumation are common, however, in sites of this period across all European regions. Inhumations in non funerary structures (or special deposits) and isolated burials or scattered groups of graves are present in many sites that also include a community cemetery. This paper presents the interrelated analysis of these various forms of inhumation attempting an interpretation within its specific social order. The main criteria would be the membership of certain individuals to the community and the exclusion of others.
