The essay presents the book The Martyrdom of the Franciscans by Christopher MacEvitt and introduces the three critical readings and the author's reply published here. It looks in particular at the impulses that the sources analysed by MacEvitt could give to new reflections on medieval martyrdom in general, not only Franciscan.
