This article discusses, from both an historiographical and a theoretical standpoint, the possible interrelations between the various forms in which the royal domain was managed on the longue durée (from the 9th to the 12th century) and medieval economic history. The fiscal patrimony, giv- en its extent and its ‘pervasiveness’, has to be – in the authors’ opinion – one of the main fields of inquiry in researches revolving around the economic changes between the early and the central Middle Ages. The article thus examines research avenues that have already been explored, and endeavours to open up some new ones.
