Abstract

The essay is a lecture read in 2005 at the 50th anniversary of the 10th International Congress of Historical Sciences (Rome 1955). It especially underlines the strong impulse by the medieval researches in Italy in the 1950s. Such studies arose, in particular, inside the Italian Historical Medieval Institute, headed by Raffaello Morghen, and were imbued with his vision of a ‘Christian Middle Age’.
