Author Guidelines

Deadlines for the delivery of items

Authors who wish to submit contributions for the journal are requested to respect the following deadlines for submission:

December 31 for publication in issue I;

June 30 for publication in issue II.

Editorial standards for publication «Giornale di Storia della Lingua Italiana»

text and footnotes:

• text: Word file (.doc), Times New Roman, 12 points, single spacing, justified, indent first line of new paragraph 0,5 cm (first paragraph excluded), margins of the document: 3,5 cm × 3,5 cm; do not apply Word styles to the document;
• footnotes: use the footnote function of your word processing program, Times New Roman, 10 points, single spacing, justified (see Bibliography for the citation methods);
• long quotations (more than three lines, either of prose or poetry): Times New Roman, 11 points, single spacing, justified; leave a blank line before and after the text.

Roman numerals are in small capitals, with the exception of the order numbers of sovereigns and popes, in uppercase (e.g. Louis XIV).

Acronyms are always in uppercase (eg. UTET).

ibidem, supra, infra are in italics; Ivi is in Roman type (i.e. not styled).

Brackets:

‘ ’ for the translation or the meaning of a single word or expression;

“ ” for the emphasis;

« » for the quotations;

[…] for ellipses in the quotations.

Together with your esssay, please provide a short abstract in English with a list of keywords and an Italian abstract with a list of keywords. In the English Keywords all nouns, adjectives and verbs must be capitalised (eg. Linguistic History of Italian); centuries must be indicated like this: 16th Century.

Bibliography:

• GiSLI adopts the APA author-date system. Each publication in the body of the text or in the footnotes is identified by the author’s name and the publication year. References not directly linked to the text should be placed in a footnote. A Bibliography at the end of the document gives the complete reference information for each author-date abbreviation, in alphabetic order. N.B.: the author-date system does not apply for the Resoconti section (see Resoconti). In that case each complete bibliographic reference must be placed in a footnote.

For texts with more than one author use a comma, e.g.: De Blasi, Montuori 2020.

If the publication has more than one volume, but the volume has not its own author-name abbreviation in the Bibliography, the volume number must be indicated like this: Bonomi 1994, vol. ii: 669-674.

If the same note includes more than one title, references are given in chronological order, separated by a semicolon, e.g.: cfr. De Mauro 1970: 43; Serianni 1989: 76; Cortelazzo et al. 2002.

• In the body of the text:

If the name of the author is syntactically part of the sentence, it must be followed by the year and the page numbers placed in parentheses (this also applies to the footnotes), e.g.: As clarified by Folena (1983: 135), etc.

• After a quotation (either long or short):

References should be placed in parentheses. E.g.:

Ognuno adunque vada al tribunal della divina misericordia, et se siamo chiamati a quello della iustitia, apelliamo sempre alla misericordia, (et) nessun comparisca a quello della iustitia, se in prima per fede non si è vestito di Christo (Ochino 1542: F5v).

If more than one title has the same author and the same publication year, they must be distinguished with a letter, e.g.: Morgana 2011a; 2011b.

If a source, especially an ancient book, lacks data such as the publisher, the place of publication, etc., but they can be reconstructed, they can be indicated between square brackets, e.g.: Bernardino Ochino, Prediche, [Geneva, Jean Gérard], 1542.

general indications:

Publications by the same author must be given in chronological order, from the oldest to the most recent.

Publications by an author must be given before the ones of which the same person is editor or co-editor.

Publications with the same author and publication year, must be distinguished with a letter, e.g.:

Serianni, Luca (2009a), La lingua poetica italiana. Grammatica e testi, Roma, Carocci.

Serianni, Luca (2009b), Le forze in gioco nella storia linguistica, in Trifone (2009²): 47-77;

If a book has more than one place of publication, they must be separated by a hyphen: Roma-Bari;

If your article is written in English, places of publication must be given in English (Berlin, Rome, Paris etc.); if it is in Italian, they must be given in Italian (Berlino, Roma, Parigi etc.).
