Abstract

In 1812 the Irishman John Henry Synge joins the list of British travellers who accomplished the Grand Tour. During his continental experience through Spain, Portugal and Italy he wrote a tour journal and completed five sketchbooks. The manuscript titled Views in Spain includes three views of Toledo from 1813, containing iconic monuments of the city. This article focuses on the study of these drawings, preceded by an introduction to the European journey, especially the Hispanic itinerary.
