The evolution of the regulatory framework on novel food: a challenge on the table of the european legislator

The scientific progress and the globalization represent the cause of a relevant novelty in the food sector: Novel Foods. The need to balance innovation, research and competitiveness on the one hand and protection of health and consumers’ safety on the other hand, is still a big challenge for the European legislator. The work focuses on the legislative evolution in this field, starting from the Reg. 258/97 and the problems emerged during the time. The recently adopted Reg. 2015/2283 is then analyzed, underlying its positive aspects but also possible weaknesses.
