Abstract

The dispute on the Baroque breaks out in Germany in the Twenties: Benedetto Croce and Walter Benjamin participate in the debate with Storia dell’età barocca and Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiel. These works are analyzed in the context of the revival of the Baroque of those years but above all as examples of a critical judgment on the historiographical use of the category of "decadence". The thread of the comparison here established is the theory of historical knowledge to which Croce and Benjamin gave revealing contributions, overcoming metaphysical solutions and never renouncing the exercise of philosophy in the understanding of history.
