VISUAL RESEARCH APPROACHES FOR URBAN REGENERATION. THE PHOTOVOICE TO ACT IN CARBONARA AND CEGLIE DEL CAMPO, PERIPHERAL AREAS SOUTH OF BARI (REGION OF PUGLIA, ITALY)
This paper deals with an application of Photovoice, a participatory method of visual action research, in the framework of the “Community photography and public art for the regeneration of the everyday landscapes of Ceglie del Campo and Carbonara” project, funded by Italian Ministry for Culture in 2019. The work focusses on methodological issues, innovative aspects of “socially engaged art” and operational challenges. The
initiative takes place in a “hybrid” space and tries to pursue heterogeneous objectives.
Raising citizen awareness and promoting research processes aimed at urban and landscape regeneration are objectives that generally disregard artistic practices, which, however, fit well into cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary approaches, and thrive within “spaces of ambiguity”.
Keywords: photovoice, photography, creative urban regeneration.
