TALKIN’ ABOUT INEQUALITIES. OVERCOMING THE CRISIS BY REDUCING URBAN INEQUALITIES
Abstract
The theme of urban inequalities has long been removed, in Italy, in the debate around the malaise of cities, curiously in coincidence with their evident growth, in recent decades. Only recently the attention to the growth of urban inequalities has found new interest, in Italy, by questioning the prevailing narratives in the public debate on the peripheries, mainly oriented towards emphasizing the themes of “degradation” and “urban security”. Instead, it seems appropriate to read the crisis of the cities, and the malaise of those who live there, developing methods of investigation and appropriate measures of urban inequalities. This objective deserves to be taken as a priority of any program that aims at the regeneration of the suburbs, also looking at the new emergencies produced by the pandemic crisis, which also contributed to aggravating the gap between the areas of urban malaise and the territorial and urban contexts of greater well-being.
Keywords: suburbs, inequalities, urban regeneration
