HUMAN FACTOR AND SAFETY IN GREEN PROTOCOLS FOR
NEIGHBOURHOODS
Abstract
Conceived for green buildings assessment, sustainability certification protocols have
progressively widened their scope, proposing evaluation systems for groups of buildings,
neighborhoods and cities. Similarly to what resulted in buildings protocols, rating systems
for neighborhood show that environmental assessment criteria are preponderant on social
ones, despite they are on average more represented in the urban dimension, and confirming,
even if to a lesser extent, the basic misunderstanding according to which sustainability is
understood, in application field, mainly in environmental terms, in spite of its strongly
anthropocentric nature. Starting from the study, the integration and the implementation of
the two main Italian certification protocols for neighborhood, an experimental protocol and
its application are proposed, in which different aspects of environmental, social and
economic sustainability of urban areas are more balanced, by considering human factor and
urban safety.
