Abstract

PAUSILYPON. ARCHITECTURE OF ANCIENT AND NEW ACCESS RITES
Abstract
The access rite to a place is often the key that allows to discover its original secrets and
conflicted life of architectures or of entire cities. Many different access rites to Pausilypon
followed one another along the history to allow the fruition of this extraordinary place. The
sea, the long hypogeum cave, the descending paths from the hill, reveal the different
constructive and cultural “visions” about the relation between architecture and natural
forms which alternated here along the ages. Between the two World Wars, upstream and on
the side of the Imperial Villa, two important architectonic interventions were added to the
history of Capo Posillipo: the Park of the Beauty (today Virgiliano Park) and the little
known Asylum of the “Scugnizziˮ at Marechiaro (today San Francesco center), enlightened
chapter of Social Architecture and Medicine. At international level it became a secular,
formative and integrated model of vanguard. From these two “modernˮ cornerstones the
design study starts to outline a wider system of fruition of the archaeological park and the
sea.
