This paper aims at exploring an aspect which is partially neglected by the theory of Radden and Kövecses (1999): the speakers’ degree of awareness when they use metonymic expressions. In particular, the paper takes into analysis the implications which derive from the considerations on the abovementioned aspect. Since such implications can be considered as problematic from a theoretical point of view, the paper aims also at introducing two possible theoretical solutions for analyzing those metonymic phenomena which imply observations on the speakers’ degree of awareness and on their intentionality.
