Abstract

The paper takes its cue from a recent proposal to renew the name of a street in Naples entitled Vico delle Ferze al Lavinaio. The suggestion provided an opportunity to reconstruct the history of ferza 'strip of fabric,' widespread in the southern area of Italoromania. On the side are some reflections on the possible motivation for the toponym and the practice of naming streets in cities whose urban layout has a very long historical continuity.
