Abstract

Enea Silvio Piccolomini’s letters are well-known, and many authors have underlined his “love” of letters; however, the problem of the nature and the characters of this source mostly remains on the fringes of the researchers’ attention. Analising the letters edited by R. Wolkan, this essay aims to offer a first re-examination of the correspondence of Piccolomini between 1431 and 1454. The essay focuses on the character of his letter-writing, on the network of his correspondents and on the relationship between his personal letters (“Privatbriefe”) and those he wrote as secretary of Frederick III (“Amtliche Schreiben”). The close analysis of Piccolomini’s letter-writing and the development of his correspondence reveal a deep connection with his personal experience, in a significant and inner relation between politics and culture.
